The purpose of this article is to provide you with the
information you need to know to make a choice on which
SonicWALL
TZ180 firewall is the best for your network.
Understanding the
TZ180 Model Categories |
The SonicWALL TZ180 area is divided into 4 different categories.
These Categories are:
SonicWALL TZ180 10 User TotalSecure - Presents all of the SonicWALL
TZ180 firewalls that support between 1 to 10 nodes* on the network.
SonicWALL TZ180 25 User TotalSecure- Presents all of the SonicWALL
TZ 170 firewalls that support between 1 to 25 nodes* on the network.
SonicWALL TZ180 10 User Wireless TotalSecure - Presents all of the
SonicWALL TZ 170 firewalls that support between 1 to unlimited nodes* on
the network.
SonicWALL TZ180 25 User Wireless TotalSecure - Presents all of the
SonicWALL TZ 170 SP firewalls that support between 1 to 10 users on the
network and offers the built-in modem for Internet failover. |
How Firewall Licensing Works |
One common mistake buyer's make is they buy the firewall based on the
number of employees or users they have on the network. This may be
accurate to a certain degree but the firewall's licensing is actually
based on the total numbers of devices on your network that need to
access the Internet.
Devices Include:
- Desktop computers
- Servers
- Laptops
- Handheld devices
- and any other devices that will access the Internet

Optional Add-On Security Services |
A powerful feature of the SonicWALL TZ series is that you can add
special security services to enhance your network security. Most
subscription are either 1,2 or 3 years long and do need to be renewed to
continue receiving the security service. These services include:
- Gateway Antivirus - The firewall will block viruses at
the perimeter of the network before it reaches any users or servers
on the network.
- Spyware Protection - Will detect, block and alert you in
the event a user tries to download an application with a spyware
bug. In addition, it can also detect if a user has spyware install
on their computer when it tries to broadcast information to the
Internet.
- Intrusion Prevention - Used to protect your servers that
can be accessed from users on the Internet. This would include
email, Web and FTP servers.
- Content Filtering - Gives you control over the type
of websites your users can view on the Internet.
- Desktop & Server Virus Protection - Protects your network
servers and desktops from viruses being installed on the local
network.
- Firewall Configuration and Training Service - Up to four hours of one-on-one training with a Certified Engineer to configure your FW and train your staff.
- Technical Support Services - Provides technical support,
firmware upgrades and hardware warranty services.

Upgrades for the TZ180 |
To help protect your initial investment in the firewall SonicWALL has
made special upgrades available. The upgrades are a one-time purchase
and do not need to be renewed. These upgrades include:
- Node Upgrade - Allows you to upgrade the licensed node
count on the firewall to support more users as your network grows.
- VPN Client Licenses - As you allow more people to access
your network remotely you can purchase additional client licenses so
they can connect.
- ViewPoint Reporting - Enables enhanced logging and
reporting of the Internet usage on your network.

Which Do You Choose? |

After determining which SonicWALL TZ180 model you need (wired vs.
wireless). All of the TZ180 firewalls are bundled with the TotalSecure
package. So when choosing a 180, it is based on the number of users that
will be supported. TotalSecure - Provides all of the security services
and support you need to successful deploy and secure your network.
